Infinity Ward added an October 30 block to the Modern Warfare 4 launch patch notes, and under Multiplayer it carries three lines: a fix for players hitting a black screen after switching teams with auto-assign while waiting for a Private Match to start, a fix for premature inactivity kicks in Search and Destroy, and exploit closures on Coal. The global section above it lists fixes for issues that could cause servers to crash during gameplay. We pulled the inactivity kick apart on its own page. This is the rest of it.
Confirmed. Both lines sit in Infinity Ward's own Modern Warfare 4 launch patch notes under the October 30 block, which is the newest update on that page. What the notes do not do is name the Coal exploits or describe the black screen's trigger beyond auto-assign team switching, so treat the scope as official but narrow.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
- Private Match is the practice field. Scrims, customs, and league practice all run out of Private Match lobbies. A lobby that goes to a black screen when someone auto-assigns onto the other side is not a cosmetic bug, it is a lost scrim block while eight or ten people rejoin.
- Team switching is constant in a scrim. You swap sides between halves, you shuffle a sub in, you balance a lobby when a player drops. Auto-assign is the fastest way to do all three, which is exactly why this one hurt.
- Coal is in the pool. Coal is one of the launch 6v6 maps teams are drilling now. Any off-map or out of bounds position that survives into a one-life round decides that round, so closures matter more in Search than anywhere else.
- Server crashes cost rounds nobody gets back. In a respawn mode a crash costs you a match you can requeue. In Search and Destroy it costs a round, and the global stability line in this block is aimed squarely at crashes during gameplay.
What the notes actually say
The October 30 Multiplayer section is short. The Private Match line is specific about the trigger: switching teams using auto-assign while waiting for a Private Match to start. The Coal line is one sentence and reads only that exploits on Coal were fixed. Above them, the global stability line says various issues that could cause servers to crash during gameplay were fixed, and the UI section cleans up Platinum camo progress for Marksman Rifles on PC plus a Calling Card challenge that displayed the reward name instead of the challenge name. The block closes by pointing players at the official Trello board for live issues and at CODUpdates for news.
What the notes do not say
Which exploits on Coal. The line does not name them, does not say whether they were out of bounds spots, geometry clips, or something else, and does not say whether the fix changes the map or just blocks a position. That matters for practice: if your team has a Coal setup built on an unusual perch, you find out whether it still holds by loading in, not by reading this. The Private Match line is clearer about its trigger, but it says nothing about whether the same black screen can appear on other lobby actions, and the stability line does not say what was crashing or how often.
A Private Match that black screens on a team switch does not cost you a round. It costs you the night.
Before your next scrim block, load a Private Match, auto-assign across sides a few times with the full roster in the lobby, and walk Coal's known angles. Two minutes of that tells you more about what this update actually changed than any patch note line will.
