On October 23 the official Call of Duty Updates account said it was investigating an issue that kicked some Modern Warfare 4 players while they were spectating in Multiplayer. It named no mode, no cause and no fix window, and the October 24 patch notes still carried it as an open known issue. The October 25 notes close it out: in the Recently Updated list, Infinity Ward states it has addressed an issue where players were being AFK kicked while spectating in some Multiplayer modes.
Confirmed. This is Infinity Ward's own patch notes page stating the fix, not a press read of it, and the new wording names the AFK kick as the mechanism rather than leaving the cause open. The fix is stated, not measured: the notes do not say which modes were affected or when the change went live, so treat the claim as the studio's own account of its own fix.
The new wording matters more than the fix line. For two days the only public description was that players got kicked while spectating. Now the studio says those players were being treated as idle, which points at the inactivity timer rather than at a netcode or spectator-camera fault.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Every other mode in the game hands you a respawn, so being flagged idle while dead is a short-lived annoyance. Search and Destroy does not. You get one life, and once it is gone your job for the rest of the round is to watch, call and feed information to whoever is still alive. An idle timer that cannot tell spectating from AFK punishes exactly the players doing that job.
- You lose the round you were calling a kick lands while a teammate is still planting or defusing, and the comms stop at the worst possible moment.
- You lose the rest of the match a mid-match kick in a mode built around round-by-round economy and reads is not something you walk back in from.
- Your team plays short in a 6v6 bomb mode, one missing body changes every site read for the rounds that follow.
- Scrims take the worst of it practice lobbies are where you sit dead and silent the longest, studying a site instead of chasing a respawn.
In a one-life mode, watching is the job. The timer could not tell the difference.
What is still open
The same October 25 notes leave real Search and Destroy work on the board. Infinity Ward rolled back its earlier fix for bomb stretching because the fix created a knock-on issue where players could not pick up the bomb in certain positions, and says bomb stretching will be addressed again as soon as it can. Matchmaking quality and stability is still listed as a global known issue, and the player-model animation fault that can show enemies in incorrect states is still being tracked.
Infinity Ward has shipped notes on October 23, 24 and 25, and stacks them on one page rather than publishing a fresh post per update. If you are checking whether a fix landed, read the dated heading and the Recently Updated list under it, not the top of the page.
