The Early Access beta weekend was gated: you had to pre-order Modern Warfare 4 to get in. The Open Beta that ran August 28 through September 1 was free, on every platform, Switch 2 included, with a Free Play Days slot on Xbox and a campaign mission and a Warzone map bolted on. Every lever that should widen a player pool was pulled. On Steam, per CharlieIntel, the peak still came in lower than the paid weekend managed.
Reported, not confirmed. The 113,500 and 115,000 figures come from CharlieIntel reading a public Steam chart, no outlet has published an independent accounting, and Activision has released no player numbers of its own. The direction is credible and the competitive community is reacting to it, but treat the exact numbers as one outlet's read rather than a verified count.
What the numbers say
- Early Access beta peak roughly 115,000 concurrent Steam players, set August 21, the day the pre-order gated weekend opened.
- Open Beta peak roughly 113,500 concurrent Steam players, across a free weekend open to everyone.
- The gap about 1,500 players, which is small in absolute terms and large in what it implies: removing the paywall did not grow the PC ceiling.
- What is missing Steam is one storefront. Console, Battle.net, Xbox on PC and Switch 2 numbers are not public, so this is a slice, not the population.
That last point matters more than the headline. Steam is the only Call of Duty platform with a public concurrent counter, which is exactly why it gets treated as a proxy for a game's health every August. It is a real signal and a partial one at the same time.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Search and Destroy is a one-life mode with no respawns and no filler. It needs twelve committed players who all want the same ruleset at the same time, and it is the first thing to break when a queue thins out. Hardcore variants sit one layer further down that same stack, which is why they show up late and disappear early in every Call of Duty life cycle.
- Queue times a shallower PC pool means longer searches for SnD specifically, and worse geographic matching inside those searches.
- Hardcore availability Hardcore playlists get cut or merged when population cannot support them. The MW4 beta never shipped a Hardcore playlist at all.
- Scrim partners pickup games and practice lobbies come out of the same pool. A thinner ceiling on PC means fewer teams to run against on a weeknight.
- Meta churn smaller pools settle into a narrow meta faster because fewer players are experimenting outside it.
A beta peak is not a launch peak. It is a warning light on the dashboard, and this one just came on.
What is not confirmed
None of this is official. Activision has published no player counts for either beta weekend, and no outlet has independently checked CharlieIntel's figures. The comparison is also not clean: the two weekends ran different content, different lengths and different platform mixes, and a free weekend spreads its players across more storefronts than a Steam pre-order weekend does. Read it as one platform's ceiling, not as a verdict on Modern Warfare 4's population.
What would verify it
Three things would move this off reported. An Activision or Infinity Ward post giving beta participation numbers would settle it outright. A B tier outlet publishing its own accounting of both weekends' Steam peaks would corroborate the figures independently. And the honest test arrives October 23: if SnD search times on PC hold up in the first fortnight after launch, the beta gap was noise. If they do not, it was the signal.
