Call of Duty published its Modern Warfare 4 PC rundown on September 29, and most of the attention went to the gunplay: weapon bloom gone, Enhanced FOV, muzzle effects masked at the point of aim. Underneath the spec tables sits the part that decides whether you are actually in a lobby on October 23. The page names the graphics drivers it wants you running, and it leaves one of them with a deadline instead of a date.
An update that is mostly settled with one reported edge. The driver versions, the 115 GB SSD floor, the AVX-only CPU rule, and the Intel Arc Resizable BAR note all come straight from Call of Duty's own PC page. The October 21 date does not appear there: that is Dot Esports putting a day on what the page leaves as 'before MW4 launch', so plan around it rather than banking on it.
What the PC page lists
- Drivers AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, and Intel 32.0.101.8974. The page adds that an Advanced Shader Delivery compatible NVIDIA driver will be made available before MW4 launch, with no day attached to it.
- Storage 115 GB on an SSD, at every one of the three spec tiers. A mechanical drive does not qualify no matter how strong the rest of the rig is, and more room is needed for mandatory updates.
- Shader delivery Advanced Shader Delivery hands you precompiled shaders ahead of time, but Call of Duty says it needs the Xbox PC app installed to do that, whichever store you bought the game on.
- Processors Only Intel and AMD processors carrying the AVX instruction set are supported at this time. Intel Arc cards additionally need Resizable BAR switched on.
- Security TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot remain required to play on PC, the rule the league already covered when Activision split its attestation wording by game.
- Preload PC preloading opens October 15 at 9AM PT. Campaign Early Access follows on October 16, and the full game, multiplayer included, unlocks on October 23.
- Steam Deck Dot Esports reports the game does not run on SteamOS because of the anti-cheat, so a Deck is only an option with Windows installed on its internal drive.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Nobody gets early multiplayer. Every roster's first MW4 Search round happens on October 23, which leaves logistics as the only edge available before then. A fifth who spends launch night on a 115 GB download, compiling shaders between rounds, or finding out that an older CPU has no AVX support is a fifth you cannot field, and a four-man cannot hold a bomb site.
- Shader stutter is a one-life problem A hitch while you peek a site costs the round, not a respawn. Advanced Shader Delivery exists to move that compile off your first match, and it only helps if the driver and the Xbox PC app are already in place.
- Input latency is now a number The built-in Benchmark Tool reports input latency next to FPS, CPU, GPU, and ping, broken out per zone. Run it before launch night and you tune against a reading instead of a feeling.
- 90 FPS is the target, not the ceiling Call of Duty says Recommended Specs are tuned for 90 FPS in multiplayer on High. A Search player chasing frames should expect to drop well below High rather than trust the automatic configuration.
- Bloom is gone, so your settings pass matters more Bullets now leave from the barrel's actual position in both ADS and hipfire. Long holds and first-shot duels reward time spent on the sharpness slider and the split depth of field settings.
What is not confirmed
The October 21 date. Call of Duty's page says an Advanced Shader Delivery compatible NVIDIA driver will arrive before MW4 launch and stops there. Dot Esports names October 21. NVIDIA's own public post about the game's launch window does not carry that day either. One outlet putting a date on a vendor's unannounced driver is a planning assumption, not a schedule, and it could land on the 22nd without anyone breaking a promise.
What would verify it
Two checks, both easy to run yourself. NVIDIA shipping a dated Game Ready driver for Modern Warfare 4 that names Advanced Shader Delivery support would settle it from the vendor side. Call of Duty swapping the Recommended Drivers line on its PC page from 'before MW4 launch' to a real date would settle it from the publisher side. If neither has happened by the 21st, assume the driver rides along with launch and move your prep to the 22nd.
The only MW4 edge available before October 23 is the one you install.
Install the Xbox PC app, clear 115 GB on an SSD, turn on TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, preload from October 15, then check drivers again the night before launch. Run the Benchmark Tool once while there is still time to change something.
