Call of Duty has straddled two console generations for years. Modern Warfare 4 ends that. Activision's platform update lists the supported hardware as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and supported PC, with no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version. Because Warzone integrates with each year's new title, the free-to-play door on last-gen closes with it. The beta is over and launch is seven weeks out, so this is the moment to find out what your regulars are actually playing on.
Confirmed. Activision's own support article states the Modern Warfare 4 platform list and says Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is playable through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06. What is not official is the calendar date that window closes: the countdown in press coverage is an estimate, not an announcement.
What Activision actually said
- Platforms Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and supported PC. No last-gen version is listed.
- June 4 Warzone came off the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One storefronts. Players who already have it in their library can still reinstall it.
- June 25 The in-game store was removed on those consoles, so COD Points and Battle Pass purchases stopped there. The free Battle Pass tiers stayed.
- End of Season 06 Warzone stays playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06, and then service on those consoles ends.
- Your account Progression and content bought with COD Points follow your Activision account to a current console or PC, with some COD Point limits inside the same console family.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
One life per round only works when six people can actually get in the lobby. Every hardcore Search and Destroy roster has that one player who never upgraded because the old box still ran the game fine. On October 23 that stops being a running joke and starts being an empty slot. This is not a settings problem you can tune around in a private match; the game does not exist on that hardware.
- Roster math Anyone still on a PS4 or Xbox One is not slow to buy MW4. They cannot buy it for that console at all.
- Seven weeks October 23 is a hardware deadline, not just a pre-order date. Sort it before scrims, not during them.
- The warmup lane closes When last-gen Warzone shuts off, those players lose their last free way to keep aim and comms sharp on the same account.
- Crossplay is not a rescue Crossplay lets supported platforms queue together. It does not put an unsupported console into a game that was never built for it.
- Nothing is lost Camos, unlocks, and COD Point content follow the Activision account, so a move to current hardware costs money and setup time, not progress.
What is not confirmed
Activision has not published the date Black Ops 7 Season 06 ends, so the exact last day of Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is unknown. Windows Central works from the Season 05 battle pass expiry to estimate a Season 06 start around September 17 and a shutdown around mid November, and is clear that this is an estimate built on how past seasons ran. Treat any specific shutdown date you see this week as press math, not as an announcement. Cloud streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce Now keeps Warzone reachable on old hardware, but added stream latency makes it a way to keep playing, not a way to compete.
What would verify it
A Black Ops 7 Season 06 blog post or an updated Activision support article carrying hard start and end dates would lock the shutdown to a calendar day. An MW4 Season 1 timing note would do the same from the other direction, since the support article ties the last-gen Warzone cutoff to that handover. The claim would be falsified by a last-gen MW4 listing appearing on a storefront, or by Activision extending Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One past Season 06.
The upgrade conversation is a roster conversation. Have it now, not on launch night.
