DISPATCH 2026.10 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: CONFIRMED

A dropped run costs the loot, not the rank.

Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer does not open until Friday, but the game has had a live population in DMZ Early Access since October 20, and October 21 was a steady run of official issue posts. The one worth reading closely is the disconnect post, because Call of Duty used it to state exactly what a dropped match costs: you keep the equipment you started with and your progression, and you lose everything you picked up.

Confirmedmw4dmzprogressionlaunch prep

DMZ Early Access opened on October 20 for digital pre-orders, which gave Modern Warfare 4 a live population three days before the game fully launches. October 21 is what that population shook loose. The night before, Call of Duty's official updates account had posted that players who sold their starting equipment or dismissed their Active Duty Operator on first entering the Forward Operating Base could end up soft locked out of DMZ Orders and deployment, with joining a friend as the workaround; it marked that resolved at 05:19 UTC. At 15:08 UTC it acknowledged an issue dropping players out of matches, said a potential fix was already deployed, and spelled out the consequences. At 15:35 UTC it opened a new one: an error making the Dog Tag Case station inaccessible. At 15:46 UTC it marked the disconnect issue resolved, 38 minutes after acknowledging it.

Confidence

Confirmed. Every claim about the issues, the fix, the resolution and the progression rule comes from dated posts on Call of Duty's own updates account, and the October 21 patch contents come from GamesRadar. The limit worth naming: the callofduty.com patch notes page still carries no Modern Warfare 4 entry at all, so the only public record of what shipped is the official issues account and press write-ups of it.

The rule, stated officially

Players who disconnected due to that issue keep the equipment they started the match with and their subsequent progression. They do not keep the loot collected during the match. That is Call of Duty's own wording, and it is the clearest statement yet of what a dropped DMZ run actually costs.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

None of this is a Search and Destroy bug, and DMZ is not a Search and Destroy mode. It still lands on your launch night. Call of Duty's own Forward Operating Base guide says DMZ XP feeds the standard Level 1 to 55 Player Progression and that weapon level is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, which makes these three days the only way anyone banks Multiplayer unlocks before the mode opens. Now we know the failure case protects the thing that matters most to that grind: a disconnect does not cost you rank or weapon levels, only the run.

  • Your grind survives a drop Progression earned is progression kept. If you are farming weapon levels to walk into Friday with attachments open, a dropped match is lost time, not lost rank.
  • The run does not survive Everything picked up in the match is gone. Bank in short runs and exfil early while the servers are this young.
  • 38 minutes is the number to remember Acknowledged at 15:08, resolved at 15:46. That is the fastest read available on how a launch week Search and Destroy problem is likely to be handled.
  • The unlock gap is real Players who ground DMZ cleanly reach the October 23 lobbies with weapon levels and shared attachments already open. The Gunsmith builds across the table on launch night can be ones you have not unlocked.

What the October 21 patch changed

GamesRadar's account of the patch, published October 21, lists fixes to DMZ enemy AI in two cases where it was overreaching: one where enemies could knock players over during infil, and one where they could reach places they should not while a player was downed. It also lists progression fixes, including first matches that reported zero XP earned, and a case where only the player who landed the kill on a Commander got credit toward the King Slayer calling card instead of the whole squad. A single campaign fix clears a progression blocker in the hotel section of Counter Attack.

What is not confirmed

Earlier on October 21, CharlieIntel reported DMZ servers crashing and players losing everything they had acquired, and said Activision had not acknowledged a fix. The official posts that followed describe a disconnect issue, a deployed fix and a resolution, and they confirm the loot loss while protecting progression. Those accounts line up on the cost but not on the shape of the fault, and nothing official has described a server crash as such. The Dog Tag Case station error is also still open, with no resolved post on it as of this writing.

What would verify it

A Modern Warfare 4 entry on the callofduty.com patch notes page would turn all of this from a social feed into a durable record, and there is still none. A resolved post on the Dog Tag Case station would close the open item. And the real test arrives Friday: if the October 23 multiplayer opening produces the same cadence of acknowledgments and 38 minute turnarounds, that is a studio on top of its launch. If the posts stop while the problems do not, that is the other answer.

Keep the rank, lose the run. That is a fair trade, and it is the first time anyone has said it out loud.
