Two days ago this was a press report. On September 28 the official Call of Duty account posted the change itself, which makes it the rare piece of launch prep that is settled rather than inferred. Double XP tokens in Modern Warfare 4 count down on game time, not on the wall clock, and the tokens sitting unspent in your account survive the jump to October 23.
Confirmed. We read the Call of Duty account's September 28 post itself this run, not a press summary of it, and it states both halves plainly: tokens count down in game time, and existing tokens are usable starting in Modern Warfare 4. The fine print is still unwritten. No Modern Warfare 4 patch note or support page defines what counts as game time, or says whether weapon XP and battle pass XP tokens ride along with the plain double XP ones.
What the official post states
- Game time only. A token counts down while the match is running rather than from the second you activate it.
- Banked tokens travel. Tokens already earned will be usable starting in Modern Warfare 4, so there is no reason to burn the stack before launch.
- Straight from the source. The statement came from the Call of Duty account on September 28, which is why this page is now labeled official rather than reported.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Count the clock in a real Search round. You load in, you set a loadout, you play maybe forty seconds, and then you are dead and watching a teammate try to retake B. Across a full match the share of time you spend alive and earning is lower in Search and Destroy than in any respawn mode, and under the old rule the token was spending itself through all of it. A thirty minute token gave an SnD player noticeably less value than it gave somebody running Domination.
- Grinding a gun for the league. Unlock paths for a specific weapon now cost closer to their stated time, which matters if you are building a competitive loadout before the first scrim block.
- No pre-launch panic burn. Tokens carry in, so the correct move is to bank them rather than dump them into Black Ops 7 lobbies over the last three weeks.
- Warmups stop taxing you. Time in menus, on the mobility course, or sitting in a party waiting on a fifth no longer eats the token.
What is not confirmed
The post is short, and short posts leave gaps. It does not define game time, so whether the clock keeps running through the loadout screen between Search rounds, or through a pause while a player reconnects, is unknown. It says tokens, not which tokens, so plain double XP is covered and weapon XP and battle pass XP tokens are an open question. The wider Carry Forward picture, including COD Points and the token types listed by press rather than by Activision, is still press-sourced and stays that way until a support page or the launch patch notes say otherwise.
The token finally runs on the clock that Search actually plays on.
If you are stacking tokens for the Modern Warfare 4 grind, the official word is to hold them. The thing still worth checking on October 23 is which token types the rule actually covers, because the post named only one.
