Two weeks out from launch, the official Call of Duty account posted its account verification position for Modern Warfare 4. Most of the coverage will read it as a 2FA announcement, and that part is mostly old news: 2FA has been mandatory on every new Activision account since August 18. The line worth your attention is the second one, because it is new and it describes something that can happen to you mid-session rather than at signup.
Official. This is the Call of Duty account's own October 9 statement, read in full this run, with Activision's 2FA support article read alongside it. One thing to keep straight: mandatory 2FA on new accounts is not news today, it has applied to every account created after August 18, 2026. What the October 9 post adds is the Modern Warfare 4 framing and a verification prompt for playing on a new platform, which the support article does not describe as a gameplay gate anywhere.
What the statement actually says
- New accounts need 2FA. Through SMS, email, or an authenticator app. Email is the default for most players. SMS is required for free-to-play players on PC.
- A new platform triggers a check. Call of Duty says it will also ask you to verify it is you when you play on a new platform, change your password, or make other sensitive account changes.
- The 2FA rule predates this post. Activision's support article dates mandatory 2FA on new accounts to August 18, 2026, with accounts auto-enrolled in email 2FA. Once email 2FA is on, it cannot be turned off.
- The free-to-play PC rule is narrower than it sounds. SMS 2FA applies per platform account, on any PC platform where you do not own a Call of Duty title released in the last two years. Own MW4 on Battle.net and that account is out of scope.
- Phone numbers are not self-serve. Once SMS 2FA is enabled it cannot be disabled from the account profile, and changing the number takes an approved Activision Support request. The article says requests can be denied.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Hardcore Search is a five-man mode with no graceful failure state. A player who cannot get past a login prompt is not a degraded player, they are an empty slot, and the schedule does not care why. Everything below is launch-week roster logistics, not security theory.
- Platform moves are the risk. Plenty of players are switching to PC for Modern Warfare 4, or moving between Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC. By this statement, each of those is a new platform, and a new platform is a verification prompt.
- Launch night is the worst time to find out. An email code is a minute. A phone number you changed two years ago is a support ticket, and a support ticket is a days problem, not a minutes problem.
- Shared and borrowed rigs. Boot camps, LAN setups, and a scrim on somebody else's machine all look like a new platform to this system. Sort the login before the practice block, not during it.
- Account selling is the actual target. Activision's own wording ties this to the illicit account selling market. A verified account with a verified number is harder to resell, which is the same economy that feeds the cheaters and the rank-boosted smurfs in your lobbies.
An empty slot is an empty slot, whether the reason is a BIOS setting or a login code.
What is not spelled out
The post does not define a new platform, so whether a second PC, a reinstall, or a new storefront on the same machine counts is still an open question. It also does not say what happens if you cannot complete the check: whether you are blocked at the menu, dropped from a match in progress, or simply prompted again later. Activision's support article answers the free-to-play PC case plainly, saying a player who does not reenroll or verify is blocked from gameplay, but it is silent on the new-platform prompt for everyone else. Treat the prompt as real and plan around it, and do not assume there is a skip button.
Log in to your Activision account, open Privacy and Security, and confirm your 2FA method is one you actually control today. An authenticator app is the method Activision recommends, and it is the one that does not depend on a carrier, a roaming signal, or a number you still have access to. Then do the same for every PC player on the roster.
