Complexity has ceased operations after 23 years. Dot Esports reported on September 23 that founder Jason Lake posted a farewell video announcing his departure, and that the decision to wind the organization down was made at the end of 2025 after the group weighed its finances against a seller-held note left over from its 2024 buyback. The Complexity name and intellectual property have gone back to GameSquare, which owned the org before Lake and an investor group reacquired it.
Reported. Dot Esports published the story on September 23 and quotes Jason Lake's farewell video directly, including the seller-held note from the 2024 buyback and the return of the Complexity name to GameSquare. We did not watch that video ourselves, and no Activision or Call of Duty League statement touches it, so take the closure as well sourced and the Search and Destroy read below as ours.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Complexity is a Call of Duty name whether or not it had a roster last season. In 2014 its lineup of Karma, Crimsix, TeePee and ACHES swept Team EnVyUs 3-0 to win the Call of Duty World Championship, in the era when Search and Destroy discipline decided titles. That is the room a competitive player is still trying to reach. The road there runs on org money, and org money in North American esports keeps getting scarcer.
- The ladder gets shorter Every org that closes is one fewer place a Search and Destroy player can get paid to play. Complexity had already exited Counter-Strike in August 2025 for the same reason: a tier-one team costs more than it returns.
- Rostermania has a backdrop The MW4 league cycle is open and rosters are moving right now. The teams doing the signing are operating in the same market that just closed a 23 year old organization.
- Prove it where the door is open None of this changes how a round is played. It changes where the proving grounds are, which is why a league you can actually enter is worth more than a league you can only watch.
What the community is saying
On r/CoDCompetitive the news landed as a wake rather than a business story. The top thread framed Complexity as the org behind the coL dynasty and cleared a few hundred upvotes inside a day, with a second thread posting old gameplay in tribute. That is sentiment, not reporting, and we are carrying it as sentiment.
An org closing does not change how you hold an angle. It changes who is left to pay you for it.
What is not confirmed, and what would verify it
Keep two things separate here. The closure itself is well reported and quotes the founder directly. Any Call of Duty consequence is our read of the scene, not a reported fact, and nobody should plan around it.
- Not established No Call of Duty roster, league seat, or player contract has been reported as affected. Complexity was not fielding a Call of Duty team when it wound down.
- What would verify a Call of Duty consequence A GameSquare statement about what it intends to do with the Complexity name, or any league or Challengers team announcement that names the org, would turn this from scene context into a roster story.
- What would falsify it A follow-up saying operations are paused rather than ended, or that the brand returns under new ownership with a competitive roster, would change the framing entirely.
