Black Ops Cold War joined Game Pass on September 8 and pulled in a wave of players who had never touched it. On PC, a lot of them are meeting a fault the game has carried since 2020. Windows Central managing editor Richard Devine, writing on September 14, describes textures that fail to render properly: surfaces that go blocky, and a sky that sometimes does not draw in at all. He reports it hits every mode, campaign and Zombies included, and that the general read in the community is a memory leak. He also reports it is not tied to one graphics vendor. It is commonly blamed on AMD cards, but he saw it on NVIDIA too, and no driver swap changed it.
Reported. This is one Windows Central editor's hands-on account plus the community's read on the cause, not an Activision statement. No official source has said the bug will go unpatched, and the memory-leak explanation is consensus rather than a confirmed diagnosis. The workarounds were tested by the reporter. The cause and the never-fixed part were not.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Legacy Cold War lobbies are back in play because the Game Pass drop refilled them, and Cold War Hardcore Search is a real lane for anyone who wants one-life reps without buying anything. That makes a rendering fault a competitive problem, not a cosmetic one. Hardcore gives you no health bar to hide behind and no second round life. Everything you have is what you can see, and a texture that drops out is the game removing part of what you can see at the worst possible moment.
- Angle reads You hold an angle off the geometry: a doorframe edge, a crate lip, the line where a wall meets the floor. When that surface flattens to an untextured block, the reference you pre-aimed against is gone.
- Silhouette contrast A sky that does not render changes what an enemy peeking a skyline looks like. On a one-life plant you get one frame to decide, and you want that frame to look like it did in your last hundred rounds.
- Mid-round onset The reported pattern is not a broken launch, it is a fault that arrives after you have been playing. That puts it squarely in the back half of a match, which is where Search rounds are decided.
- Fixable before you queue Unlike most things that go wrong in a legacy title, this one is reportedly a settings problem. That means it is prep work, and prep work is cheap.
The three settings that moved it
- Medium settings, no HD textures Devine reports that running the high resolution texture pack prompted the fault in every single game for him, and that dropping to medium without it made the problem rare. On Game Pass the HD pack cannot be uninstalled, so the move is to make sure the game is not using it.
- Lower the VRAM usage target Cold War exposes a target for how much video memory it will try to use. He reports there are three options and suggests around 80 percent for most setups, while calling it a help rather than a fix.
- Turn off upscaling He reports that disabling DLSS, together with the medium settings, made the biggest difference on NVIDIA. That also means turning off ray tracing. For a 2020 title on a competitive config you were probably not running either.
His own result, on his hardware: from the fault appearing multiple times an hour to playing for multiple hours without seeing it once. He adds one more thing worth doing if you stream or have a browser open on the side, which is turning off hardware acceleration so nothing else is competing for the card. None of this is a patch. It is load reduction, and it is consistent with the memory pressure explanation even though nobody official has confirmed that explanation.
You cannot patch a six-year-old renderer from the settings menu. You can stop feeding it.
What is not confirmed
Three things. First, the cause: memory leak is the community consensus Devine reports, not a diagnosis Activision or Treyarch has published. Second, the permanence: the expectation that no patch is coming is the reporter's read on a six-year-old game, and Activision has not said it will leave this alone. Third, the results: one editor's before and after on one PC is a useful signal, not a benchmark. Your card, your VRAM, and your resolution are not his, so treat the three settings as a starting config to test in a private match, not a guarantee.
What would verify it
A Cold War PC patch note on callofduty.com naming texture streaming or video memory would settle both the cause and the permanence at once, and would flip this to Official. That is not a far-fetched ask. In a statement to Windows Central on September 5, Activision said an update had addressed all known vulnerabilities in Modern Warfare 2 on PC, and added that the team continues to support its legacy titles with additional updates coming soon. Legacy PC support is live work right now, so a Cold War fix is possible. Until a patch note says so, the settings config is the only thing in your hands.
