Season 05 gave Black Ops 7 a second matchmaking lane. Quick Play, Party Games, and Black Ops Classic moved to a system Activision described as inspired by Black Ops 1 and 2, with smarter team balancing and wider match variety, while the Open playlists that shipped with the game stayed where they were. We tracked the mechanics when the patch notes named those three playlists. Three weeks of actual play later, the community verdict is running the other way.
Community Pulse, and no higher. Dexerto is a credible Call of Duty outlet and we read the piece at source this run, but what it documents is player sentiment gathered from Reddit threads and a creator's posts, not lobby data. Treat this as a real and loud reaction to a shipped change, not as proof that skill weighting went up.
What players are actually saying
Dexerto's August 10 piece collects Reddit complaints describing the new lobbies as unbearable and as strict as anything from the last several years, and quotes players saying the connection-first, low-skill-consideration matchmaking was the part of Black Ops 7 they liked most. The outlet also cites the Call of Duty analyst TheXclusiveAce, who posted on August 9 that the Season 05 update turned his favorite modern Call of Duty into a much worse experience overnight. We could not load his account directly this run, so that quote reaches you through Dexerto, not from us reading the post.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
- Warmups drift Quick Play and Black Ops Classic are the standard warmup lanes. If those lobbies tighten, the hour before a scrim stops resembling the games you are warming up for.
- Ranked is untouched Skill Rating still sorts Ranked Search and Destroy. Nothing in the Season 05 playlist list changes the lobbies you get when you queue for placement.
- The beta is the real test Activision has said Open playlist options will be in the Modern Warfare 4 beta. It has not said which system is the default, and that is the number that decides your August reps.
- Read the reaction, not the verdict Sentiment moves faster than measurement. A sweat spike gets blamed on matchmaking when a weapon meta or a thinning player base can produce the same feeling.
A loud lobby is evidence of a feeling. It is not evidence of a number.
What is not confirmed
Nobody outside Activision has measured this. There is no published skill-weighting figure for the Season 05 system, no Activision statement conceding that lobbies got stricter, and no announced rollback. The claim traveling hardest, that this classic matchmaking becomes the Modern Warfare 4 default, is player inference rather than anything the studio said. The only Activision line on the beta is that Open playlist options will be included, which PC Gamer quoted from a July 22 Call of Duty post and which we read in PC Gamer's July 26 report. Dexerto notes players expect a Season 05 Reloaded update in early September; that timing is not locked either.
What would verify it
Three things would move this off sentiment. An Activision or Treyarch statement acknowledging a matchmaking change, or reverting one. A Season 05 Reloaded patch note that names the affected playlists again. And, closest to hand, the Modern Warfare 4 beta menus on August 21: if the playlist screen labels an Open lane and a standard lane, we stop guessing what Modern Warfare 4 defaults to and start testing it on the maps we will actually compete on. Until one of those lands, this stays a reaction.
