The Black Ops PlayStation ports have been a rough ride since July 9, and most of the patching so far has been damage control. The July 31 title update is different. The Call of Duty updates channel posted on July 30 that two fixes were planned for it: adjusting sniper tuning to expected values, and addressing certain situations where friends in a party can be placed on the enemy team. MP1st reports the update went live the next day on PS4 and PS5 as version 1.06 and 1.006. Both of those are gameplay fixes, not storefront housekeeping, and both land on things a Search player feels in the first round.
Reported. The two fixes themselves come straight from the Call of Duty updates channel, which posted them on July 30 as planned changes for a July 31 update. That the patch actually deployed on July 31, and that it is PlayStation only, comes from MP1st. There is no published changelog page from Activision or Iron Galaxy listing the shipped contents, and nobody has posted measured sniper values, so treat the fix as real and the size of it as untested.
What the July 31 update changed
- Sniper tuning. Sniper behavior was pulled back to the values it was supposed to have. Since launch, players had been reporting that rifles did not aim or handle the way the original did.
- Party placement. The update addresses cases where players queuing together got dropped onto opposing teams instead of staying on the same side.
- PlayStation only. MP1st says the update applies to the PS4 and PS5 versions, and that the Xbox back compatible version is not getting the same treatment.
- Still open. The same report lists dead zones, connection issues, lobby balancing, and a lingering party error as unresolved, and notes that the July 30 Black Ops 2 patch did not close the modded lobby problem.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Legacy Call of Duty is a real lane for this league, and Black Ops Search is the reason the ports were worth buying. Up to now every patch on these ports has been about stopping damage. This one changes how a round plays, and both items sit on the exact parts of Search that decide holds and retakes.
- The long lane is back to being a duel. In a one-life round, a rifle that does not behave as expected turns a lane hold into guesswork. Correct tuning means the sniper you trusted in the original is the sniper you are pointing down that lane now.
- A split party is not a team. You cannot practice Search, run a four, or scrim anything if the game keeps putting your own players across from you. This is the difference between an organized lobby and four people queuing alone.
- Your account is still the exposed part. Black Ops 2 lobbies are still reportedly rewriting progression and leaving some players unable to matchmake, and no patch has closed it. The classes and unlocks you play Search on are the thing at risk, not just a match.
- Pubs are the recruiting lane. Legacy pubs are where Search players get found and warmed up. Fixing team placement makes that lane usable again, which matters more to a roster than any cosmetic patch note.
Two patches in two days. The one that fixes how you shoot counts for more than the one that fixes how you queue.
What is not confirmed
Nobody has published a changelog page from Activision or Iron Galaxy for the shipped update. The official post we read was written before the fact and says the fixes were planned for a July 31 update, which is a statement of intent, not a record of what deployed. Nobody has posted measured sniper numbers either, so expected values is a phrase, not a spec you can check. The unresolved item from our last dispatch is also still unresolved: the verification condition we set was a named title update that says it addresses the modded lobbies, and this update is not it.
What would verify it
Three things would settle it. A published changelog from Activision or Iron Galaxy that names the update and lists what it shipped. Side by side sniper testing on the port against the original, posted with clips, so expected values becomes a number instead of a promise. And a named update that says in plain language that it addresses the account tampering in Black Ops 2, which is the fix that decides whether legacy Search on PlayStation is worth organizing around at all.
Treat Black Ops on PlayStation as playable for Search reps again and Black Ops 2 as a risk you are choosing to take. If you are getting a four together for legacy Search, run it on Black Ops until an update names the Black Ops 2 problem.
