DISPATCH 2026.08 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: CONFIRMED

Activision finally moves on the Black Ops 2 port. Expect false ban notices.

Call of Duty says it has released backend updates for the Black Ops 2 PlayStation port to improve match security while it reviews accounts carrying incorrect Prestige levels. The catch for anyone still playing: while that review runs, you can be pulled out of a match and shown an account ban notice that does not actually mean you were banned.

Three weeks after the Black Ops 2 PlayStation port shipped, Call of Duty has publicly moved on the account tampering problem. On the night of August 2 the official Call of Duty Updates channel said backend updates are live to improve match security, and that accounts carrying incorrect Prestige levels are being reviewed. As recently as July 30, press covering the problem noted there had been no comment on it at all.

Confidence

Confirmed. This comes straight from the official Call of Duty Updates channel, posted late on August 2, and it states the backend updates, the Prestige level review and the temporary notice behavior directly. What it does not say is whether accounts already actioned during this mess get restored.

What Call of Duty actually said

  • Backend updates are live. They are described as improving match security, not as a client patch you download.
  • Accounts are under review. Specifically accounts showing incorrect Prestige levels, which is exactly what players got hit with.
  • You may see a ban notice you did not earn. Players removed from a match or session during the review may briefly see an account ban notice while the systems apply updated account data.
  • Reconnecting is the test. Call of Duty says if you can reconnect, your account was processed fine and nothing more is needed. If you cannot reconnect, your account was identified for enforcement.
  • It is blamed on old plumbing. The notice behavior is described as a byproduct of legacy systems used by older titles.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

The legacy lane matters to this community because Black Ops 2 is where a lot of one-life habits were built, and the port put it back on a current console. But a title you cannot trust to hold your account is a title you cannot schedule around. Until this review finishes, treat the port as a place to run casual reps, not as a place to stake anything you care about losing.

  • Do not panic on a boot. A ban notice mid-session is now an expected artifact of the review, not proof anything happened to you.
  • Try the reconnect immediately. It is the fastest signal you have. Back in means processed. Locked out means flagged.
  • Keep your reps somewhere stable. If a night matters, run it in a title that is not currently rewriting account data underneath you.

What is not answered yet

The post is specific about what happens going forward and silent about what happens looking backward. It does not say whether players who were actioned earlier, after their Prestige was altered by someone else, get those accounts back. It also does not give a finish line for the review, so there is no date at which the false notices are supposed to stop.

A ban notice you can reconnect through is noise. One you cannot is the real thing.

Run it with people who requeue

Legacy lobbies are rough right now. A full stack absorbs a bad session a lot better than a solo queue does.
