DISPATCH 2026.09 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: REPORTED

Black Ops 2 made PlayStation's Top 10. Modern Call of Duty did not.

PlayStation shipped a system update on September 16 that puts a weekly Top 10 popularity chart on the PS5 home screen. In the United States, a 2012 Call of Duty sits at number nine, and the app that holds Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, and Warzone does not appear at all. What that gap actually measures is the part nobody has published.

PlayStation pushed system software update 26.06-14.00.00 on September 16 and quietly answered a question players have argued about for years: what is everyone actually playing. The Welcome Hub now carries a Community Activity widget with two views, a Trending Now list of multiplayer games and modes that are surging, and a Top 10 of the most popular games in your country over the past week. The first United States Top 10 has a 2012 Call of Duty on it, and no modern one.

Confidence

Reported. IGN, Kotaku, and Insider Gaming all describe the same PS5 update and the same United States Top 10, and two of them print the identical ten entries, so the chart itself is solid. What nobody has published is the methodology: Sony dropped the player counts the beta widget showed, so read the ranking as a real signal and not as a player count.

What the chart actually shows

  • Black Ops 2 at number nine IGN and Insider Gaming both print the same United States Top 10, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 sitting ninth, between Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel's Wolverine.
  • No modern Call of Duty at all IGN reports that the Call of Duty HQ app, which carries Black Ops 6, Black Ops 7, and Warzone, does not appear anywhere on the list.
  • Two views, not one Top 10 ranks the past week by country. Trending Now surfaces multiplayer games and modes that are climbing, which is the view that tells you when a legacy playlist wakes up.
  • The player counts got cut Insider Gaming reports that the beta version of this widget showed raw player counts and that the shipped version does not.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

A legacy lane lives or dies on whether lobbies fill. The league already runs Black Ops 2 Search on the PlayStation port, and until now the only read on its population was an analyst sales estimate and one insider claim about player counts. A first-party chart is a different class of evidence. It will not tell you how many people are queuing for Search at 11 PM on a Tuesday, but it tells you the game is still drawing at national scale on the platform where the port lives.

  • Warmups have a floor A game ranking ninth in the country is not a dead playlist. Bomb-mode reps on the port are a realistic ask, not a hope.
  • The port work matters more now Black Ops 2 moved every multiplayer match onto dedicated servers on September 10. Population plus dedicated servers is the first time legacy Search on PlayStation has had both at once.
  • The modern pool is a question mark If the Call of Duty HQ app really is that far down, the Black Ops 7 ranked pool heading into its final season is thinner than the schedule makes it look.
  • This is a pre-launch reading Modern Warfare 4 lands October 23. Where this chart sits six weeks from now is the number worth watching, not where it sits today.

What is not confirmed

Sony has not published what the chart measures. Kotaku says it is not even clear whether the list refreshes weekly or on a rolling basis, and the player counts that would settle the question were removed before launch. There is also a structural reason the Call of Duty HQ app could sit lower than its real audience: it is one entry standing in for three games, while Black Ops 2 is its own entry. IGN raises player fatigue as an explanation and flags it as a guess. Treat it that way. The chart is evidence that Black Ops 2 is being played. It is not evidence of why modern Call of Duty is missing.

What would verify it

Three things would turn this from a signal into a fact. Sony publishing the methodology behind Community Activity, or restoring the player counts the beta carried. The same ranking holding for several consecutive weeks and in regions outside the United States. And the Call of Duty HQ app appearing or staying absent once Modern Warfare 4 ships on October 23, the moment the modern side gets its strongest possible push. Until one of those lands, this is one week, one country, one platform.

A 2012 Search and Destroy game outranking every modern Call of Duty on PlayStation is either a compliment or an indictment. Either way, the lobbies are there.
