Every Call of Duty needs a connection to matchmake. That is not new. What is new is that Modern Warfare 4's own support page puts Private Matches inside the same requirement, and gives a reason: the game streams its textures in every mode, so the client is reaching out even when the lobby is six people you invited yourself.
Confirmed. This is Activision's own support article for Modern Warfare 4, not press interpretation, and the connection requirement is written into the page's FAQ with Private Matches named inside it. What the page does not do is explain how the requirement behaves in practice, so treat the requirement as settled and the practical detail as open.
What the support page actually states
- Texture streaming, everywhere Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to keep visual quality high while cutting the install size on your drive.
- Continuous connection Because of that, the page states you need a continuous internet connection to play Multiplayer, and it writes Private Matches into that sentence, along with DMZ.
- Split-screen platforms Two players sharing one screen is listed for Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5. Nintendo Switch 2 and PC are not named in that line.
- PC security gate The PC footnote repeats TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as requirements, and says other security measures may be enforced.
- Account gate The console and PC footnotes both say a mobile phone number linked to your Activision account may be required to play.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
A private match is the one room a competitive team controls. It is where you set the rules, run the same bomb plant twenty times, walk a new player through a rotation, and settle an argument about whether a spot is actually holdable. Reading it as an online service rather than a local lobby changes what you plan around.
- Scrim night is a service window If the Call of Duty backend is having a bad night, your custom lobby is having one too. Build a fallback into scrim plans instead of assuming privates always work.
- Bandwidth is a competitive setting Texture streaming in every mode means the household connection matters during practice, not just during ranked. The teammate who shares a line with a 4K stream is now a scrim problem.
- LAN is an open question Nothing on the page describes an offline or local-network path for Private Matches. Anyone planning a bring-your-own-console event should confirm before they book a room.
- Roster access is stacked Between TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot on PC, a possible phone number link, and a live connection, there are three separate ways a new player can be blocked from a Tuesday scrim. Check all three during tryouts, not on match night.
The private lobby is not your backup plan anymore. It is another thing that can be down.
What the page does not answer
The requirement is stated plainly. The behavior is not. Activision does not say what happens when the connection drops mid private match, whether a short interruption ends the lobby or streams in a lower texture, what minimum bandwidth counts as enough, or whether any local or LAN path exists for organized events. Those answers usually arrive in a launch-week support article or in the first patch notes, and they are the ones that decide how you schedule practice.
Launch is October 23. That is enough time to test your setup rather than discover it. Get the whole roster through the PC security requirements and the account link now, and treat the first week of private matches as a test of your connection as much as your bomb plants.
