DISPATCH 2026.08 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: CONFIRMED

Hardcore Search and Destroy made the launch list

Activision's Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer deep dive, published August 21 as the Early Access beta opened, itemizes the launch mode list and marks which modes ship with a Hardcore variant. Search and Destroy carries the mark. Until now Activision had only promised Hardcore variants in general terms. This is the first time it has named the one that matters to this community.

ConfirmedMW4HardcoreModesLaunch

Activision published its Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer deep dive on August 21, hours after the Call of Duty NEXT broadcast and as Early Access opened. Most of it is movement and gunplay copy. The part that matters here is a plain list near the bottom: every multiplayer mode shipping at launch, grouped by type, with an asterisk on the ones that get a Hardcore variant. Search and Destroy has the asterisk.

Confidence

Official. The mode list, the asterisk footnote, and the Hardcore marks are Activision's own words on callofduty.com, dated August 21, 2026, and read in full this run. What the post does not state is anything about Hardcore playlist availability during the beta, or a Hardcore mark for Arms Deal or Frontline.

What the launch mode list actually says

The post groups launch modes into Respawn, Round-Based Tactical, Ground War, and Party, then closes the list with a single footnote: the asterisk indicates a Hardcore variant game mode supported at launch. Six modes carry it. Everything else on the list does not, at least not as written.

  • Search and Destroy Listed under Round-Based Tactical Modes with the Hardcore mark. This is the line that matters.
  • Respawn modes with the mark Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, and Free for All all carry it.
  • New respawn modes without it Counter Attack, Inflation, and Hijack are listed as new and carry no Hardcore mark.
  • Gunfight is unmarked Gunfight and the new Gunfight 10v10 sit beside Search and Destroy in the tactical group with no Hardcore variant stated.
  • Ground War and Party Combat Outpost, other large modes, Gun Game, and Drop Zone are all listed without the mark.
  • The count Six marked modes out of thirteen named at launch, and only one of the six is a round-based one-life mode.
One asterisk on one line is the whole ballgame for a site built on one-life bomb rounds.

Arms Deal is Search and Destroy with a wallet

The same post introduces Arms Deal, a 5v5 mode Activision describes as based on Search and Destroy, where kills and objective play earn in-match cash that buys a limited selection of weapons and equipment each round. It is single life, and dying costs you your whole loadout. That is a buy-round economy grafted onto a bomb game, and it is the closest thing Call of Duty has shipped to the format that competitive shooters outside this franchise are built on. The catch is that Arms Deal and Frontline are named as joining the launch lineup in one section of the post and then left out of the itemized launch mode list entirely, so Activision has not stated whether either one gets a Hardcore variant.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

Every year the same question hangs over a new Call of Duty for this community: will the mode we actually play exist on day one, or will we spend a season asking for it in a feedback thread. Activision answering it in writing, on its own site, before launch, is the difference between planning a season and hoping for one.

  • The lobby exists at launch Hardcore Search and Destroy being named means you can build a roster, a map rotation, and a scrim schedule around October 23 instead of around a wish.
  • The gunplay changes carry over No hipfire bloom, reworked depth of field, and muzzle effect masking are core systems, not mode toggles, so they land in the Hardcore variant with reduced health on top.
  • Arms Deal is the wildcard A 5v5 single-life economy mode is a serious competitive format on paper. Without a stated Hardcore variant it stays a core-health mode until Activision says otherwise.
  • Kill Block is not the SnD map yet The post says Search and Destroy and Domination are being put through their paces on Kill Block, with more core modes planned after launch. Beta Kill Block is Gunfight.

What is not confirmed

Three gaps, and they are worth holding onto. Activision has not said whether a Hardcore playlist appears in either beta weekend, and the official beta patch notes list no Hardcore playlist at all. It has not stated a Hardcore variant for Arms Deal, Frontline, Counter Attack, Inflation, or Hijack. And a mode existing at launch is not the same as a mode being permanently playlisted, which is exactly the trap the classic playlist question has been sitting in all month. The verification is simple: watch for a Hardcore filter in the beta playlist menu, and for a launch playlist page that names Hardcore Search and Destroy on its own.
