Call of Duty spent October 19 publishing its launch reference tables for Modern Warfare 4: every Operator, every weapon, every piece of equipment, every Field Upgrade, every Killstreak, and the player level each one unlocks at. Most of it reads like a completionist checklist. One part of it is a planning document for anyone who intends to play competitive Search and Destroy in the first week.
Confirmed, and from the only source that settles it. These levels come from Call of Duty's own launch loadout blog, published October 19, which lists every piece of multiplayer equipment with the player level that unlocks it. The companion progression blog carries a level by level appendix and the two agree item for item. This is the launch build, not the August beta, so these are the numbers you live with on October 23.
What unlocks when
Create-a-Class does not open until Player Level 4. Before that you deploy with premade Default Loadouts, including a Demolition kit at Level 2 and a Sniper kit at Level 3. From Level 4 the tables run to 55 with one or more unlocks at nearly every step.
- Level 4. Flash Grenade, Smoke Grenade, Frag Grenade, Sticky Grenade, Portable Radar, and DDOS, the pulse that jams nearby enemy electronics and sensors.
- Levels 7 to 15. Drill Charge at 7, Snapshot Grenade at 10, Riot Shield at 11, Proximity Mine at 13, Trophy System at 14, Concussion Grenade at 15.
- Levels 22 to 29. Trip Wire at 22, Heartbeat Sensor at 23, Thermite at 26, Molotov Cocktail at 28, Shock Stick and Smoke Wall at 29.
- Levels 37 to 45. Claymore at 37, C4 at 43, Tactical Insertion at 45.
- Levels 47 and up. Stim at 47, Throwing Knife at 49, Screamer Mine at 53.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Search is a utility game. Trophy Systems eat the pre-plant flash, proximity explosives hold the flank nobody can watch, C4 clears a planted bomb through a wall, Drill Charges open a site from outside it, and smoke buys the cross. The official tables hand you the cheap half of that kit on day one and park the expensive half past Level 37.
- Defense is thin early. Claymore at 37 means a fresh account spends most of the grind with no proximity mine on the second entry. Proximity Mine at 13 and Trip Wire at 22 are the stand-ins, and both behave differently.
- Retakes get harder. C4 at 43 is the most useful retake tool in a one-life mode, and it is the second to last lethal on the ladder. Expect early-week retakes to be done with bodies instead.
- Trophy lands early, and that matters. Trophy System is a Field Upgrade at Level 14, so the counter to grenade spam arrives well before most of the grenades that beat it.
- Smoke is free from the start. Smoke Grenade unlocks at Level 4, but the blog's own description says weapon fire and explosions rip through the coverage. It buys a cross, not a push.
- Tactical Insertion is the odd one out. It is a Level 45 Field Upgrade that marks your next spawn point. In a mode with one life per round there is no spawn to mark, so read it as a Ground War and DMZ item, not a Search pick.
Day one you get smoke, flashes, and frags. The round winners start at 37.
What the blog does not say
These are multiplayer tables and neither launch blog uses the word Hardcore, so nothing here states which items survive into a Hardcore playlist or any competitive ruleset. Call of Duty's own September announcement for Collateral described a Search-adjacent mode with custom loadouts and killstreaks switched off and a between-rounds buy instead, which is the reminder worth holding onto: an unlock level is not the same as availability in the mode you actually play. No Modern Warfare 4 competitive ruleset and no Ranked Play date has appeared in the launch posts.
DMZ Early Access opened October 20, and Call of Duty states that XP earned in DMZ contributes to the same 1 to 55 player progression. Three days in Hajin is three days of unlock levels banked before the first Search lobby on Friday.
