DISPATCH 2026.08 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: REPORTED

Your bullets now carry a tracking device

Modern Warfare 4's ISO Nightshade unlocks an Apex attachment called the ISO Trace: RFID rounds that tag whoever they hit and feed that player's live movement and direction to a display on the gun. Call of Duty documents the mechanic itself. Dexerto reported on August 31 that in practice players are following tagged enemies through walls, and no official comment on that part has landed.

Fully leveling the ISO Nightshade in the Modern Warfare 4 beta unlocks its Apex attachment, the ISO Trace. Call of Duty's weapons guide describes it plainly: specialized RFID ammunition tags targets on impact and feeds real time tracking data to the optic's integrated display, which shows a red dot of the target's movement and direction. Apex attachments do not consume a normal attachment slot, so this rides along on top of a full build.

Confidence

Reported. The attachment and what it does on impact come straight from the official Call of Duty weapons guide, so the mechanic itself is not in doubt. The through walls part is Dexerto's reporting from August 31, shown with screenshots rather than controlled testing, and Infinity Ward has not commented. Treat the tracking range and what it reads through as unsettled until the studio or a clean test says otherwise.

What the official description does and does not say

The guide commits to three things: the tag lands on impact, the readout is live, and it shows movement and direction on a display built into the gun. It says nothing about range, nothing about how long the tag lasts, and nothing about whether the dot survives a wall between you and the tagged player. That last gap is the whole argument.

What is being reported

Dexerto published a piece on August 31 arguing the ISO Trace amounts to a wallhack, on the basis that a tagged player stays readable on the display regardless of what is between you. The evidence shown is screenshots of the display, not controlled testing, and Infinity Ward has not responded to the characterization. It is a credible outlet describing a real mechanic, but the specific claim that the tag reads through geometry is theirs, not the studio's.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

Search and Destroy is decided by information, and Hardcore is decided by who gets it first. A round has no respawns, so a single chip hit that keeps paying out position data is worth more than the damage it did. If the reported behavior holds, one grazing shot on a rotation turns an unresolved duel into a standing read on where that player went.

  • Chip damage becomes recon In Hardcore most hits kill, but the hits that do not would now hand you the survivor's route. That flips the value of a missed spray.
  • It would beat a Heartbeat Sensor A sensor sweeps an area on a delay. A tag follows one named player live, and it costs no equipment slot to carry.
  • Post plant reads change A defuser you clipped on the way in is a defuser you can watch. That is a retake solved before it starts.
  • It rides free on a full build Apex attachments sit outside the normal attachment slots, so nothing else in the loadout pays for it.

What would verify it

A line in the official weapons guide or a patch note stating whether the tag persists through geometry would settle it, as would a tuning entry that gives the tag a duration or a range. A private match test with one player tagged and then fully occluded would settle it for us. Until one of those exists, read wallhack as a description of how it feels, not a documented property of the attachment.

The tag is documented. What it sees through is not.
Test window

The Open Beta closes Tuesday, September 1 at 10:00 AM PT. If you want to watch the ISO Trace behave for yourself, the ISO Nightshade has to be fully leveled before then. Today's Day 4 notes also buffed that gun, so the version you test tonight is not the one people were posting about on Saturday.
