Modern Warfare 4's launch week turned up the usual crop of movement tech, and one piece of it was not intended. Diving immediately after a sprint jump handed the player a speed boost, and Infinity Ward has now said so in writing. The October 28 update reduces dive velocity by 23% to take the edge off it, and the studio is unusually direct that this is a patch over the hole rather than a repair.
Confirmed as a shipped change and as the studio's own description of it. The October 28 section of the official patch notes states the exploit, the 23% number, and that the fix is temporary. What is not settled is the replacement: Infinity Ward says a long-term solution is in development and gives no date, so treat the current dive values as a stopgap that will move again.
What Infinity Ward changed
- The exploit A dive input taken immediately after a sprint jump produced a boost of speed the movement system was not meant to grant.
- The mitigation Dive velocity is reduced by 23% across the board. That is a blunt instrument: it slows every legitimate dive too, not just the chained one.
- The stated plan Infinity Ward says a long-term solution is in development that would fully fix the exploit without the dive's velocity being impacted, and that it will share more in a future update. No date was given.
- Other exploits in the same update An exploit letting the Riot Shield reach out of bounds areas was addressed, and several DMZ exploits were closed.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Search and Destroy is a timing game before it is a gunfight. A defense is built on knowing roughly when the first attacker can physically arrive at a site, and anything that compresses that window moves every rotation behind it. A free speed boost available to anyone who learned a two-input trick is exactly the kind of thing that quietly breaks a practiced setup, and in Hardcore the punishment for being half a second late to a hold is the round.
- Opening timings shift back If your attacking side had been getting to a site faster than your defense expected, that gap just narrowed. Re-time your first contact rather than assuming last week's reads.
- Every dive is slower now, not just the exploit The 23% cut applies to the honest dive out of a peek as well. If you use dive to break an angle, it buys you less distance than it did.
- Treat it as temporary Infinity Ward has said the number is a stopgap. Do not rebuild your whole movement habit around a value the studio has already announced it intends to change.
- Exploit use carries a policy risk Call of Duty has already said intentional abuse of exploits violates its Terms of Service and that it has begun enforcement. Running the trick while it still works is not a free bet.
What is still open
The replacement fix is the part worth watching. If it arrives and restores dive velocity, the current slower dive is a few weeks of noise and the movement baseline returns to launch. If it arrives and keeps the nerf, then October 28 is the new normal and the dive is permanently a weaker tool than the one the beta taught people to use. Season 1 on November 6 is the first realistic window, and the patch notes are where it will show up.
A temporary number is still the number you are playing on tonight.
