DISPATCH 2026.08 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: CONFIRMED

Both teams could hear the bomb. Weekend 2 fixes it.

Infinity Ward's August 28 Modern Warfare 4 beta patch notes carry a two line audio entry with a long shadow for Search and Destroy. Bomb pickup and drop sounds were being broadcast to both teams, and that is fixed for the Open Beta. The same entry cuts the maximum distance at which bomb placement audio carries.

Most of the August 28 Modern Warfare 4 beta patch notes are about pace: Tactical Sprint, slide speed, time to kill, aim assist. Buried under the audio heading are two lines that matter more to a Search and Destroy team than any of it. Infinity Ward reduced the maximum distance for bomb placement audio in Search and Destroy, and fixed an issue where bomb pickup and drop sounds were being broadcast to both teams.

Confidence

Confirmed. This is quoted from Infinity Ward's official Modern Warfare 4 beta patch notes for August 28, in the audio section of the Weekend 2 entry. The notes state the change but do not publish the old and new audio distances, so the size of the cut is not public and has to be tested in game.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

Search and Destroy is an information game played with one life. You do not get a second look at a site, so the reads you get in the first fifteen seconds decide the round. A bomb carrier sound that plays for the defense is not a small audio bug. It is the single most valuable piece of information on the map, handed over for free, every single round of Weekend 1.

  • Carrier identity A pickup sound audible to the defense tells them the offense has committed a specific player to the bomb, which narrows who is entering and who is trading.
  • Site read Hearing a drop tells the defense the bomb changed hands, which usually means a rotation or a trade went badly. That is a free rotate call.
  • Plant distance Cutting how far plant audio carries means a defender deep on the far side of the map has to actually be in position to hear it, rather than getting the call from spawn.
  • Hardcore amplifies it Hardcore strips the HUD, so sound carries more of the load. An audio leak that is annoying in Core is round deciding in Hardcore.
In a one life mode, an audio leak is not a bug. It is a free enemy callout.

What the notes actually say

  • Bomb placement audio Reduced the maximum distance for bomb placement audio in Search and Destroy.
  • Broadcast bug Fixed an issue where bomb pickup and drop sounds were being broadcast to both teams.
  • Scoring fix Under bug fixes, the notes also fix an issue where Search and Destroy could display inconsistent XP amounts per elimination.
  • Availability Search and Destroy is listed in the Open Beta Quick Play rotation alongside Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Inflation, and the new Hijack mode.

What is not settled

Infinity Ward did not publish numbers. The notes say the maximum distance was reduced; they do not say from what to what. That matters, because the useful version of this change leaves plant audio loud enough to be a real defensive cue at fair range while killing the cross map free call. The only way to know which one shipped is to run plants on Lithium and Transit 213 with a teammate posted at increasing distances and find where the sound drops off.

Still unnamed

No official source has named a Hardcore playlist for the Open Beta. Every audio value discussed here is Core Search and Destroy until Activision publishes a Hardcore mode list. Treat Hardcore behavior as untested, not assumed.
