DISPATCH 2026.08 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: CONFIRMED

Infinity Ward says the TTK is not right yet, and starts turning it down

The Modern Warfare 4 beta update Infinity Ward promised on Friday night landed Saturday, and the patch notes go further than the teaser did. Enemy footsteps got quieter and shorter-ranged, two guns lost lethality, map voting switched on with a fourth map, and the studio put in writing that the time-to-kill is still wrong.

On Friday night Infinity Ward said it had seen the day one conversation and was already building an update. On Saturday the update arrived with patch notes attached, and it is a bigger swing than the teaser suggested. Enemy footsteps are quieter and carry less far, two weapons lost damage, map voting is live, and the studio put its time-to-kill problem in writing rather than waiting for the data to settle.

Confidence

Confirmed. This is Infinity Ward's own dated patch note on the official Call of Duty patch notes page, not a report about it. What is confirmed is the direction and the specific numbers published today. What is not confirmed is whether these values survive the weekend: the studio explicitly frames the lethality cut as a start and says more is expected.

What actually changed

  • Footstep audio Infinity Ward reduced the distance at which enemy footstep and gear audio can be heard and decreased its overall volume. The stated goal is audio that tells you someone is approaching without handing you their exact position from range.
  • Time-to-kill The studio agrees the time-to-kill is not quite right yet and has tuned down the lethality of some guns to start. The ISO Nightshade lost damage range across every band plus a headshot multiplier cut from 1.4 to 1.3. The Oris 8.6 lost close and mid range and went from 1.7x to 1.6x on the head.
  • Map voting Voting is enabled from today. Infinity Ward says it needs four maps for voting to work, and the new map Cachette brings the pool to four.
  • Visibility Transit 213 had its shadowed areas brightened and its overall color balance adjusted.
  • Equipment Frangible Rounds lost 26.8 percent of their slow duration and 21.4 percent of their slow magnitude, and the Oris 8.6 Razor Apex Attachment now takes longer between throws.
  • New mode Inflation joined the rotation at 10:00 AM PT. It is a cash-collection mode where the richest players get marked as high value targets. It is not Search and Destroy.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

Footstep range and time-to-kill are not two of the settings that shape a one-life round. They are the two. Everything else, from perk choice to which side you attack first, is downstream of how far you can hear a rotation and how fast a trade resolves. Both moved on the same day, which means the reads you built on day one are now calibrated to a game that no longer exists.

  • Callouts shrink A shorter audible radius means information arrives later and closer. Site holds that leaned on hearing a rotation two rooms out now need a body or a piece of equipment watching that lane instead.
  • Entries get cheaper to survive Lower lethality on an SMG and a marksman rifle widens the window where a first shot does not end the round, which slightly favors the team that trades well over the team that peeks first.
  • Map voting changes prep With voting live, the map pool stops being a coin flip. Lobbies concentrate, and the maps your stack already knows get played more, which is worth exploiting while the pool is only four deep.
  • Transit 213 opens up Brightened shadow and rebalanced color means fewer free hiding spots in the dark corners of the bus depot. Angles that were a gamble to hold are now a readable duel.
You cannot rehearse a site hold against numbers that changed overnight. Re-walk it.

What is not settled

Infinity Ward calls the lethality cut a start and says to expect more. Read that literally: these are not launch values, they are the first move in a negotiation that runs through both beta weekends. The footstep note is framed the same way, with the studio saying it will keep looking at feedback on that topic. Anything you lock in this weekend is provisional.

One thing has still not moved. Search and Destroy is listed in the official beta reference as a Weekend One core mode, but the day one playlists did not include it and the mode added today is Inflation. Weekend One closes at 10:00 AM PT on August 25. If your reason for being in this beta is one-life practice, that window is getting short.

Known issues worth planning around

Join in progress is temporarily disabled on Kill Block while Infinity Ward fixes a round-transition bug, and the notes say cooking some lethals can drop frame rate. The Mobility Course lockup from day one is fixed, as is a bug that played wet-surface footstep audio on dry ground.
