DISPATCH 2026.09 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: REPORTED

The legacy PC lane might finally be safe to load into.

Activision told Windows Central that an update released this week addressed all known vulnerabilities in Modern Warfare 2, the 2009 game whose Steam version has spent years as the most dangerous place in the franchise to queue. The same statement says more legacy title updates are coming. It arrived as a press statement, not a patch note, so treat the fix as claimed until the lobbies prove it.

For years the answer to why not just go play an old Call of Duty has been the same: the PC versions are not safe. Modern Warfare 2 on Steam was the worst of them, a lobby you could join and leave with someone else's code running on your machine. Activision now says that is handled. In a statement given to Windows Central for a September 5 article, the publisher said an update released this week addressed all known vulnerabilities in Modern Warfare 2, that the team continues to support its legacy titles with additional updates coming soon, and that anyone aware of further issues should report them through its bug bounty portal.

Confidence

Reported. These are Activision's own words, but they reached us through Windows Central rather than a patch note or a support article, and no official Activision page carrying this fix was readable this run. CharlieIntel's post carrying the identical quote is what pins the title to the 2009 release on Steam. Strong signal, unverified result: nobody outside Activision has yet shown that the exploits are actually gone.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

Legacy Call of Duty is not nostalgia for this community, it is a live lane. The Black Ops PlayStation ports proved this summer that there is a real audience for small maps, simple loadouts, and one life on the line. The PC half of that lane has been shut, not because nobody wanted it, but because the price of loading in was a security risk no sane person accepts for a warmup. A patched Modern Warfare 2 is the first legacy PC title in years that might be worth organizing a night around.

  • A warmup lane that costs nothing Nobody has to buy anything new to run hardcore Search rounds on maps the whole roster already knows. That is the cheapest on ramp there is for a squad building chemistry before the MW4 season.
  • Custom lobbies, not matchmaking The value of an old title is private matches under your own rules, which is exactly the thing you cannot do if the client itself is the threat.
  • A precedent for the rest of the catalog Activision says more legacy updates are coming. If that holds, the classic PC catalog stops being a warning and starts being an option.
  • Console backward compatibility is untouched Windows Central says the Xbox backward compatible versions of these games are still full of aimbots and worse, and that Activision did not comment on them. A PC fix does nothing for those lobbies.

What Activision actually said

Read narrowly, the statement is four things. An update shipped this week. It addressed all known vulnerabilities in Modern Warfare 2. Legacy title support continues, with additional updates coming soon. Players who find more issues should file them through the bug bounty portal. Windows Central presents this as the resolution of a problem it has been following for a while, and notes that it asked about the Xbox backward compatible versions and has not been answered. CharlieIntel carried the same quote and specified the 2009 release on Steam, which is the detail that tells you which Modern Warfare 2 is being discussed.

All known vulnerabilities is a moving target. It means the ones known today.

What is not confirmed

There is no patch note. No support article, no post on an Activision channel, no changelog naming what was closed. The phrase all known vulnerabilities is Activision's own, and it is bounded by what Activision currently knows about. Nothing here commits to a date, a scope, or a named title for the promised follow-up legacy updates. Nothing here addresses console backward compatibility. And two outlets carrying one publisher statement is still one source, not two.

What would verify it

A patch note or support article on an Activision channel naming the Modern Warfare 2 update and the class of problem it closed moves this to confirmed. So does a couple of weeks of public play with no fresh remote code reports from the people who have spent years documenting them. The other direction is just as clear: a new exploit report out of the same PC lobbies in the next few weeks tells you the fix was partial. We are watching for both, and we are not calling the lane open on a press statement.

Track it

This opens our legacy PC security watch. If Activision names the next legacy title it patches, or if the Modern Warfare 2 lobbies break again, it lands here.
