IGN reports that Call of Duty YouTuber Tdawgsmitty has launched a petition to strip skill-based matchmaking out of the franchise's unranked playlists, and that it cleared 500 signatures in roughly an hour. The ask is narrow on purpose: leave skill matching in Ranked Play, where players opt into it, and take it out of the lobbies people load when they are not trying to climb. He pointed at Destiny as the precedent, after Bungie reversed course on vaulted content under sustained player pressure.
Reported by IGN, which read the petition and its description directly. The petition and its early signature pace are solid. Whether any of it changes MW4 matchmaking is open speculation, and Activision has said nothing about it.
The petition description leans on former Call of Duty developer Brian Bright's account that his team's matchmaking work focused on ping and region, and that Activision later brought in data scientists who worked with marketing to push harder on skill matching. Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 running the matchmaking system that arrived in Black Ops 7 over the summer, the one Black Ops 7 players spent a season complaining about.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Pub lobbies are infrastructure for a competitive roster. They are where you warm up before a match, where you get a feel for a gun you have not run yet, and where you find out whether a new player can actually hold a site. When every unranked match plays like a qualifier, that infrastructure stops doing its job. The petition's own wording lands on the same complaint from the casual side: experimenting with a different weapon or playing with friends of different skill levels turns into another test.
- Warmups A tryhard pub is not a warmup. If MW4 lobbies run tight all night, teams lose the low-stakes reps they want before a scrim or a match.
- Recruiting Strict matchmaking punishes mixed-skill parties, which makes it harder to drag a newer player into a lobby with your SnD five and see what they have.
- Where the test belongs The petition asks for skill matching to live in Ranked, where you opt in. That is the same line competitive players already draw between pubs and anything that counts.
What is not confirmed
A petition is a signal, not a change. Activision has not answered it, the only signature number in print is IGN's early snapshot, and nothing about MW4 matchmaking has moved. If anything, the studio has already said its piece. Dexerto reported on September 10 that Infinity Ward co-studio head Mark Grigsby told a player asking about MW4 SBMM that all the matchmaking information the team had at that point was what had already been posted on the Call of Duty account. That reads like a studio done talking about it for now, not one about to reverse.
What would verify it
Three things would move this off the reaction page. A statement from Activision or Infinity Ward that names unranked matchmaking directly, rather than pointing back at an earlier post. A launch-day MW4 playlist menu that ships an Open or low-skill option next to the default, the way the beta did. Or a signature count big enough that outlets outside the Call of Duty beat pick it up. Until one of those lands, treat this as pressure and price it accordingly.
A petition is a signal, not a patch note.
