The Call of Duty League turned over its 2027 season on October 14, and the shape of competitive Call of Duty for the Modern Warfare 4 year is now public. Hardpoint and Search and Destroy are still two of the three modes. The third slot changed hands: Overload is out, and Hijack, one of the new Modern Warfare 4 objective modes, takes its place. The League says Hijack was developed with the CDL in mind, with professional player feedback folded in during development. The season itself starts December 4 with a two-week Kickoff Classic, runs through four Majors in Europe, Birmingham, Toronto, and the US West Coast, and ends at a Championship Weekend hosted by OpTic Texas.
Official. The Call of Duty League stated all of it in its own 2027 season announcement on October 14, the mode swap and coaches on stage included. The 2027 map pool it depends on is not out yet, so the veto math is settled in principle and not in practice.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Every title transition reopens the question of whether the one-life round keeps its seat at the top table, and this one answered it early. Search and Destroy is locked into the 2027 rotation, which means the mode you grind in a hardcore lobby is the same mode the best players in the world get judged on all year. The ruleset details matter as much as the mode list, because they decide which maps get repped and how a series ends.
- Search keeps the biggest slice of the map pool. The new veto math is written against a pool of five Hardpoint maps, five Search and Destroy maps, and three Hijack maps, so Search carries more of the competitive map list than any other mode.
- Coaches can talk between Search rounds. Coaches on stage are allowed to speak to players between Search and Destroy rounds and during respawn modes, which turns a mid-series adjustment into a coached call instead of a comms scramble.
- The Grand Finals veto tilts to the winners bracket. In the Best of 7 Grand Finals format, the team arriving from the losers bracket loses its bans across the Hardpoint, Search and Destroy, and Hijack veto. Taking the long road now costs you map control in the only series that matters.
- Online coin flips stop compounding. The second time two teams meet in an online qualifier, the team that lost the first coin flip automatically wins the second one, so one bad toss no longer shapes a whole season of veto position.
- A third mode means a third practice block. Hijack is a plant and defuse objective mode, so plant timing, retake angles, and defusing under pressure carry over from Search. The rotations do not, and that is new ground to cover before December.
What Hijack actually is
Hijack is not new to Modern Warfare 4. It shipped in the Open Beta, and Call of Duty's own beta guide describes it as a core 6v6 mode where both teams fight over a single Data Spike near the center of the map, carry, throw, or pass it toward the enemy Comm Station, plant it to generate points over time with a bonus when it detonates, and defuse enemy Spikes before they score. Carrying the Spike costs you your lethal, because the lethal input becomes the throw. What is new is the promotion: the League picked it over Overload as the mode that sits beside Hardpoint and Search all season.
Search and Destroy survived the transition. The third mode did not.
What is still open
The League has not announced the 2027 map pool, so which five maps carry Search is unknown and the full Best of 7 veto outline will not publish until that pool does. Nothing in the announcement dates Modern Warfare 4 Ranked Play, which is still the biggest unanswered question for players who want a ladder and not a league. Major I's location in Europe, Major IV's West Coast city, and the Championship Weekend venue are all still listed as to be announced.
Our earlier page on this story carried an insider claim that Major III would use a twelve-team play-in. The League's own 2027 announcement puts the bottom six qualifying teams into a single elimination play-in for two spots in an eight-team double elimination bracket, so treat the twelve-team figure as superseded. The coin flip change and coaches on stage from that same insider report did hold up, and the 359-match season figure it gave is still not something the League has stated.
