DISPATCH 2026.08 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: REPORTED

The build everyone judged MW4 on was an alpha

Infinity Ward put out the sixth episode of From The Ward on August 10, a behind the scenes look at the Fanatics Fest event in New York where the public first played Kill Block. Two details matter for anyone who read the hands on coverage: that build was an alpha, and player testing at the event turned up a visibility bug.

From The Ward Episode 6 landed on August 10, taking players behind the scenes at Fanatics Fest in New York, where the public got its first hands on with Kill Block in July. It is a promo piece, but it carries a correction to how the hands on coverage from that weekend should be read. The build was an alpha, and the studio says so plainly.

Confidence

Reported. The alpha framing comes straight from the episode and the posts carrying it, both read this run. The bug detail, a marksman rifle fired while aiming into smoke producing a flashbang like effect, comes from press summaries of the episode rather than from patch notes, so treat the detail as reported and the fix as unstated.

What the episode adds

  • The build was alpha. The episode and the posts carrying it describe what the public played as an Alpha build of Kill Block, not a beta or a launch candidate.
  • It was stabilized for the room. Press summaries of the episode say the team spent roughly a month playtesting the build to keep it steady for a public event.
  • Players broke something. Those summaries also describe a bug found at the event: a marksman rifle fired while aiming into smoke produced something close to a flashbang effect on screen.

Why hardcore SnD cares

Everything the competitive side has been arguing about since July, the time to kill, the movement, the visual recoil, the visibility, came off builds like this one. Alpha is not a disclaimer to wave away. It is a reminder that the numbers people quoted from July are not the numbers that will be in the beta on August 21, let alone at launch.

  • Smoke is a Search tool. Smoke covers plants, defuses, and the walk onto a site. A weapon interaction that whites out the screen through smoke would break the exact plays that decide one life rounds.
  • This is the second visibility item. The blinding muzzle flash from the gameplay premiere was also called a bug. A pattern of visibility bugs before beta is worth tracking, not shrugging at.
  • Test it yourself. Two weeks out, the useful move is a checklist for the beta rather than a verdict from a preview build.
Judge MW4 on the beta build. The one the public touched in July was a work in progress, and the studio just said so.

What is not confirmed

That the bug is fixed. Nobody has published a note saying so, and an episode describing a bug being found is not the same as a change list. Also still unpublished: the beta mode and map list, and whether Kill Block supports Search and Destroy in the beta at all.

What would verify it

The beta itself. Early access opens August 21 after the Call of Duty NEXT broadcast, and beta patch notes are the first place a smoke or visibility fix would be named. Take a marksman rifle into a smoke, aim through it, and see what the screen does. If it behaves, the alpha bug was caught. If it does not, that is a report worth writing up while the beta is still feedback.

Also teased

GameSpot reports that a Call of Duty community account replied to questions about a Warzone Resurgence map codenamed Zodiac with the words find out in beta. That is a tease, not a beta content list, and it says nothing about multiplayer playlists.
