DISPATCH 2026.07 / INTEL CONFIDENCE: REPORTED

The Black Ops PS ports are getting patched. The exploit is not dead yet.

The new Black Ops 1 and 2 PlayStation ports spent their first week overrun by an XP exploit that could lock players out of multiplayer entirely. Activision has now answered: the Domination and Ground War playlists are pulled, and a first-phase server-side fix has reset the players who got locked out. The studio says more is coming, which is the tell that this is a patch in progress, not a finished one.

The Black Ops 1 and 2 PlayStation ports landed on July 9 and were overrun within days. Modified save-data exploits let players farm max rank in Domination and, worse, shove opponents into negative XP that read as below level 1 and locked them out of multiplayer entirely. As of the middle of last week Activision had answered only on crossplay. That has changed. Press now reports a real, if partial, response: playlists pulled and a first-phase server-side fix pushed to restore the players who got locked out.

Confidence

Reported. GamesRadar and Dexerto describe the same response, and CharlieIntel says the update went out overnight on July 14, so the shape of the fix is well sourced. What is missing is an official patch-notes page, and the studio itself called this only the first phase, so treat the exploit as mitigated rather than closed.

What Activision changed

  • Playlists pulled Domination and Ground War, where the exploit was most common, were disabled on July 13 while the team investigated, per GamesRadar and Dexerto.
  • Server-side hotfix A first-phase fix went out on July 14 applied directly to the servers, so players did not need a large client download to get it.
  • Locked-out players restored Accounts pushed below level 1 by negative-XP attacks were reset to level 20 so they could get back into matches and resume progression.

The exploit is not an aimbot or a network attack. It uses modified PlayStation save-data to inject negative experience into other players' accounts, the same trick that haunted the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of both games for years and was never fully solved there. Activision had said these ports run on new multiplayer servers built to keep those old problems from returning. The first four days proved that promise incomplete.

Why Hardcore SnD cares

Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 are foundational one-life Search and Destroy titles, and the league runs them in its legacy lane. A current-gen re-release should be an instant warmup and scrim lobby for the crew. It is only that if the public multiplayer is safe to load into. When a single Domination lobby can boot you below level 1 and lock you out of the game you paid for, no captain is going to trust pub lobbies for prep. The value of these ports to a competitive team rises and falls on how completely this gets fixed and how fast the pulled playlists come back.

What is not confirmed, and what would verify it

This is press reporting on a studio note, not a published changelog. Activision called this the first phase and said more mitigations are coming, which means the underlying save-data exploit is mitigated, not closed. Dexerto notes Black Ops 2 saw fewer problems than Black Ops 1, so the picture is not uniform across the two games. A full Call of Duty patch-notes page detailing the server-side fix, the Domination and Ground War playlists returning to rotation, and confirmation that save-data can no longer be weaponized would move this from a rushed response to a solved problem.

A re-release is only a scrim lobby if the lobby is safe to load into.
