The Black Ops 1 and 2 PlayStation ports went live on July 9, and the first competitive read on them is rough. This is less about what is in the box and more about whether you can play a clean match right now.
This updates our earlier ports writeup. The exploit and server complaints are widely reported by players and by IGN but are not yet addressed by a patch, so treat the scale as reported, not settled. The crossplay point is a direct clarification from the official Call of Duty updates account: PS4 and PS5 matchmake together, and there is no play with PS3 or other platforms.
What is going wrong
Players report that Black Ops 1 lobbies are easy to compromise. In a modded lobby you can spawn, blow yourself up with a grenade, leave, and jump to the max rank. Whole enemy teams are quitting to farm it, which hands out forfeit wins and wrecks normal matchmaking. Server stability and hit registration are drawing complaints on top of that.
- Modded lobbies. Black Ops 1 lets players host compromised lobbies that break progression and match integrity.
- Instant max rank. Spawn, grenade yourself, leave, and you hit the level cap. Teams quit together to farm it.
- Server and hit-reg. Reports also cite server drops and inconsistent hit registration in early multiplayer.
- Performance. Digital Foundry flagged the Black Ops 1 port running at 1080p with no anti-aliasing and a 60Hz cap.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
The league runs legacy Call of Duty in its own lane, and Black Ops 1 and 2 are exactly the kind of titles a hardcore Search crew would fire up for one-life practice. A multiplayer overrun by rank farmers and modded lobbies means public matches are not a reliable place to scrim or warm up. Until it is cleaned up, treat the ports as a campaign and Zombies buy first and a competitive platform second.
The crossplay clarification
One thing did get cleared up. The official Call of Duty updates account says PS4 and PS5 players can matchmake with each other, and Season Pass owners can play with non owners. There is no play with PS3 or other platforms. That refines our earlier note that the ports had no crossplay: they have cross generation PlayStation matchmaking, just nothing beyond the PlayStation family.
Legacy CoD is back on PlayStation. Right now the lobbies are not worth trusting for practice.
What would verify a fix
Watch for an Activision or Treyarch patch that closes the modded-lobby exploit and stabilizes servers. A support note or patch entry addressing progression abuse and hit registration is the signal that the ports are safe to treat as a practice platform. Until then, the unplayable label is a player verdict, not a settled state.
