For most of a year the matchmaking argument has been fought with vibes on both sides. On August 19 Activision put its own numbers on the table two days before the Modern Warfare 4 beta opens, and told players exactly which systems they will be queueing into. The short version for anyone loading in on Friday: the beta runs the new Black Ops 7 Season 05 Standard system, Open matchmaking sits beside it, and nothing about October is settled.
Confirmed on what Activision said. Every figure comes from the official Call of Duty account and IGN wrote up the same thread from Activision's post. What the numbers mean is contested: reader-added context on the same thread and CharlieINTEL argue Activision is judging the future of matchmaking on the niche Black Ops 7 player base, and search times were disputed by creator testing. Treat the figures as Activision's read of Activision's data.
What Activision actually said
- Open versus Standard on Black Ops 7. Measured across 80 percent of players from launch through Season 04: 32.7 percent higher quit rates, 14.4 percent fewer kills per minute, 5.3 percent lower win rates, and 59.2 percent more Not Fun ratings on Open.
- Nuketown 24/7. Quit rates rose 141 percent on Open, and Activision says its most competitive players were leaving one in every three matches.
- Since Season 05. Quit rates down across every skill group, search times down against Season 04, average ping improved, and top players facing tougher matches while still quitting less.
- The MW4 beta plan. Both systems live. The new Season 05 Standard system runs, and Open runs alongside it so the two keep generating data. No commitment yet on which is the shipping default in October.
Where the numbers are contested
The thread is Activision's read of Activision's own data, and it is being pushed back on. Reader-added context on the same X thread argues Activision has published matchmaking figures before with weak framing, and points to the fact that Black Ops 7 launched with SBMM vastly reduced by default. CharlieINTEL adds that leaning on Black Ops 7's player base to judge the whole franchise is a mistake because that base is narrower than the games Activision is comparing against. Creator benchmark posts also dispute the search time improvement claim.
Why Hardcore SnD cares
Hardcore Search and Destroy is the least forgiving playlist in Call of Duty for matchmaking to punish. One life removes the low stakes practice ground, so a lobby that disbands after one map or that packs the top of your bracket erases a whole warmup block before you can adjust. If Standard genuinely holds lobbies together and drops quits the way Activision claims, that is exactly the shape a competitive stack wants for scrim prep. If Open produces a wider skill spread as the reporting suggests, that is exactly the shape a solo grind wants before matching up. The MW4 beta is the first place a Hardcore player can test both against SnD directly.
- Try both playlists in the beta. The beta runs Standard and Open in parallel. Play the same SnD map in each and note which produces the lobby continuity your role wants: caller in Standard for a full lobby, entry in Open against a wider spread.
- Warmup versus roster prep. Use Standard for pre-scrim warmup where a full stable lobby matters. Use Open for solo queue reps where a wider skill range is the point.
- Feedback that lands. Activision says this is what a beta is for. If a Standard SnD lobby disbands on you or Open feels one sided, use the in game survey; it feeds the shipping decision.
Activision's thread names Black Ops 7 through Season 04 as the measurement window and Nuketown 24/7 as the sharpest example. Neither is Modern Warfare 4 or Hardcore Search and Destroy. Treat the Standard numbers as directional for how MW4 might feel, not as a prediction for a competitive HC SnD queue.
